Event description

Description

This event is open for all and is organised by the IStrcutE. Free pizza and soft drinks will be available with the main event being a presentation given by the distinguished Prof Tim Ibell, who is currently working at CUED. This presentation will demonstrate that great (structural) engineering relies at its heart on creativity and intuition. Through various examples, a case will be made as to how the digital revolution is changing what it is to be an engineer, and how having ideas which add value is the true skill of an engineer. This skill can, and must, be learned at university.

Speaker Biography: Professor Tim Ibell FREng believes passionately in the role of engineers as designers and his message will be of the importance of nurturing, encouraging and celebrating creativity in design. He is currently the Sir Kirby Laing Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge and prior to that he has had extensive teaching experience at the University of Bath, where he was the Head of Department and subsequently Associate Dean of the Faculty. During his time there, he won the University of Bath's main teaching award. In 2015 he was President of the Institution of Structural Engineers and he currently sits on the Boards of the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Education Committee of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
