Description

Forum for Nurse and Health Care Assistants working in General Practice settings in Islington.

Janet Balabanovic will be speaking about:

Working with patients with long-term conditions: developing confidence to explore emotional wellbeing and mental health in brief consultations

Comorbidity of long term health conditions and mental health difficulties or emotional distress is a challenge for primary care. Two-thirds of patients suffering from long-term physical health conditions (LTCs) also experience mental health problems, so physical health clinicians often face this challenge in their daily work. At this event we will explore your experience on the front line to understand what particular challenges you face and to help you cultivate some knowledge and strategies to manage this.

The training will support you to think about the links between physical and mental health in the management of patients with long term conditions. We will explore barriers to asking and thinking about mental health in brief consultations, for example, the commonly stated concern that this will “open up a can of worms”, and help you find the words to open up a helpful conversation about this with your patients. We will also support you to develop skills to explore emotional wellbeing confidently once emotional issues have been picked up, and to assess and evaluate risk. The content of the training will be applicable to patients with a wide variety of LTCs including diabetes, respiratory illness and cardiac disease and many other conditions.

Services for patients with LTCs are changing and evolving. Psychological therapy services for patients with LTCs are expanding through local IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) with the development of ‘Integrated IAPT’. In this training we will bring you up to date on the LTC service provision within Islington iCOPE. We will help you to understand the type of work done at iCOPE, how it may complement yours, the types of patients that are likely to benefit from this input and the practicalities of making a referral.

We understand that working with patients with LTCS who also suffer from mental health issues is not only difficult for the patient but also for the staff caring for these patients. There will be some space to discuss difficult consultations and the stresses of the work and we can explore the staff support that is available in your setting, including current and future potential provision.

Please book a place so we know how many to expect, any questions please contact igpf.nurseleads@nhs.net
