Description

Islam for Africa is an organisation set up to help preserve the faith of African Muslims in light of aggressive missionary activity. We will work closely with Imaams and Khateebs in often very poor areas of Africa to:

• empower them to educate their local communities about Islam
• provide high quality schooling for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

THE PROBLEM:

Poverty, ignorance of the Islamic faith and the allurement of free, high quality education in missionary schools are the main factors that are causing tens of thousands of Muslims to abandon Islam and convert to Christianity.  In addition, many have completely stopped practicing their religion and remain Muslim only in name.  As for practising Muslims and active preachers, their numbers are few, and their resources and abilities are limited.

A two week fact finding mission in West Africa in May 2016 highlighted the huge effort that Christian missionaries are exerting to convert Muslims to Christianity. In cases where conversion to Christianity is unsuccessful, the missionaries then focus on ensuring that the Muslim individual is indifferent to Islam. They then wait a number of years and work on their children.  This effort, backed by tens of millions of dollars, and a well-executed strategy is unfortunately very effective in winning over the Muslims to Christianity.

The message from the local Imaams whom we have visited in Sierra Leone is that they feel powerless in the face of well financed and highly organised missionary activity.  Aware of the great value that Africans place on education, the missionaries are setting up free schools, providing high quality education and at the same time teaching Christianity. Your Muslim brothers and sisters in Africa need your support to help preserve their faith. Allah says in the Quran: O you who believe, fear Allah and do not die except in a state of Islam (as Muslims).

We do not want our brothers and sisters in Africa to die upon disbelief in the same way that we would not want this for ourselves and our children.

Allah’s Messenger (salalahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  “none of you truly believe until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”

The greatest blessing Allah has bestowed upon us is Islam.

PROVIDING SOLUTIONS:

Islam for Africa has produced a brief report highlighting the extent of missionary activity in Africa. This report, coupled with good intelligence information received from local Imams in West Africa has fed into our strategic planning document. Based on this, we have developed a pilot model which will inshaa Allah support our objective of preserving the faith of African Muslims. We will initially operate in one location in Sierra Leonne and then roll the model out to other areas.  Sierra Leonne is 75% Muslim, and English speaking.
Our model revolves around one key concept; Educate!

• In each identified area we will build a masjid (if one does not already exist), a well, and a primary school which will teach the national curriculum of the country and teach Quranic and Islamic Studies. Thus our Muslim children will gain a solid education in an environment designed to preserve their Muslim identity. As well as teaching Maths, English, Science, ICT, the school will also teach vocational subjects. Although we will initially start with primary schools, this will later be extended to secondary schools.

• Secondly, we support knowledgeable local Imaams to train local Muslim preachers to teach in the surrounding villages.  The training programme will consist of lessons in aqeedah, fiqh, h̩adīth, and tasfeer. All attendees will be provided with a free set of key books.

• Thirdly, we will send English speaking students of knowledge from the West to Africa to deliver seminars designed for the local population.

• Fourthly, we will strengthen the connection between the local masjids and the community by sponsoring a number of activities including: feed a fasting person, distribution of zakāt al fitr, and distribution of free food and clothes to the needy. There will also be an after school Madrassa.

The four above-mentioned objectives will connect the local Muslim populations to their masjid, give real life opportunities to their children by providing education, train a network of Muslim preachers to do outreach work, and minimise the efforts of Christian missionaries.

HOW CAN YOU HELP!?

With the help of Allah, and then your help, we will commence the following projects in 2016-17. This will cost us £475,000. Some of the work is already underway.

• Building three masjids
• Building 10 wells in various locations in Sierra Leone
• Building  three schools in Fa Baina (supporting 600 children in 14 rural villages)
• Feed the Fasting in the masjids.
• Islamic books for masjid library
• Equipping school with furniture, teaching resources and library
• Free stationary packs for 600 children
• English Islamic library for masjids
• Dawah material for free distribution
• Dawah training programme and study packs for Muslim preachers
• Running costs for three schools and three masjids.
