Event description

Description

For the past ten years, the Annual School Health Conference has been a forum for a broad range of professionals and key stakeholders passionate about school health to connect, discuss, learn about and shape the future of school health in Indiana. The inaugural conference in 2008 was the catalyst for the formation of the Indiana School Health Network, in partnership with Covering Kids and Families of Indiana (CKF-IN). Each year since,

  • we have facilitated connections among educators, health care providers, managed care entities, legislators and more;

  • we helped them recognize the connection between children’s health, health care coverage and educational outcomes;

  • we connected seekers of knowledge and resources to leaders in the field and on the cutting edge from our region and across the country; and

  • we have grown in number and scope through our connection to the CKF-IN local coalitions across the state.

We are proud of the progress we have made and acknowledge there is much more to be accomplished. Please join us this year as we, again, gather together to network, share, learn, and celebrate a decade of Connecting the Dots.

Dr. Michael J. Mann - Michael J. Mann spent over 15 years working as a teacher, principal, and administrative leader and was fortunate to be a member of high performing educational teams that prioritized promoting student health and wellbeing as a means to improving student academic outcomes and their prospects for life success. Currently, he is an assistant professor at the West Virginia University School of Public Health, where he teaches and conducts research on public school and public health partnerships as a means of ensuring the wellbeing and success of every child. His presentations are thoughtful, often touching and humorous, celebrations of how schools can help every student discover their own greatness.

He began his career teaching music in public, private, and charter schools from 1995 to 2009 before moving into school administration. He is currently Executive Director of Paramount School of Excellence in Indianapolis.

As a strong believer in data-driven solutions for health and education, Tommy began partnering with health initiatives in Indianapolis in 2011. Through data-driven collaborations with the Richard M Fairbanks Foundation, Community Health Networks, Indiana University, Research and Evaluation Resources, and the M.A. Rooney Foundation, Tommy has pushed for innovations in school-based health center models by leveraging correlations between academic performance and social determinants of health.
