While spirituality, religious coping, and intrinsic religiosity have been identified as protective constructs related to mental health, participation in organized religion has also been correlated with various negative mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, shame, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation. This presentation examines the impact of negative religious experiences and coping on mental health and presents practical guidelines to assist counselors working with clients who have been negatively impacted by religious experiences.
