Event description

Description

Is Freedom a Jewish Value?

Every year at Passover, the most widely-observed Jewish holiday in the United States, we sing about and celebrate freedom. We also learn about the importance of freedom from Jewish history, whether we're remembering the ancient Israelites enslaved in Egypt, or anti-Semitism of many sorts, over hundreds of years.

Yet think about other crucial Jewish values -- community, learning, taking care of those in need, connecting to God or the spiritual ... how do these fit with freedom?

Questions like these are complex. They speak to who each of us is as a Jew, a modern person, and an American. Reflecting on them we can better understand our identities and our choices.

Join us to explore this often-ignored topic from an open-minded, adult perspective, led by Rabbi Bridget.

All are welcome, and no previous knowledge is needed.

WHEN: This is a session of our Open-Minded Torah series, which meets twice monthly on the first and third Wednesday of the month, October-June.

Come for one session, a few, or the entire series. See below for dates.

WHERE: We meet in the home of participants in Berkeley.

WHO: Newcomers of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome. You don't need to be Jewish to draw on Jewish wisdom. Please feel free to invite friends who may be interested.

QUESTIONS? Contact Rabbi Bridget Wynne at rabbibridget@jewishgateways.org or 510-410-0622.
