Big Money vs. Our Democracy

A heated discussion on the impact big money has on elections and the available alternatives

Washington, DC, October 24, 2017: Nonprofit organization LANCAR Ink will be teaming with DC for Democracy to host an exciting and too rare event--a formal panel discussion on campaign finance reform! Come eat and drink as WUSA9’s TV Anchor Derek McGinty discusses DC’s Fair Election Act with Councilwoman Elissa Silverman, Attorney General Karl Racine, and other key figures for and against publically funded campaigns. A difference in opinion will be shared at Mr. Henry’s in Capitol Hillduring an extended Happy Hour and Dinner 6PM-9PM; with complimentary appetizers served 6PM-7:30PM.

We are framing the event as a way to get engaged on the issue of campaign finance reform, one of the most pressing issues before the DC Council this fall. With the DC Council debating important reforms to our democracy, Virginia holding elections later this year, and the 2018 election cycle right around the corner, this issue is at the foundation of many policy and political debates both locally and nationally.

Discussions are in full force wondering; How can we have fair elections? Some argue public funding for campaigns will ensure transparency and others insist government influence will negatively impact our democracy by silencing up-and-coming political candidates. The question becomes, "When does money go from being necessary for a candidate’s voice to be heard to corrupting the political process?"

Come find out by joining us Tuesday Oct. 24th, at 6PM. Discussion starts at 7PM
