Irish Famine Commemoration Board
The International Irish Famine Commemoration was established in 2009 to honor those who perished during what the Irish call An Gorta Mór, or the Great Hunger. The annual commemoration also pays tribute to the outstanding accomplishments of the men, women and children who were forced to flee their beloved homeland in one of the worst catastrophes in modern history. New Orleans, no stranger to monumental disaster, finds herself in prestigious company: previous host cities are Sydney, Boston, Liverpool, New York, and Toronto.
The 2014 Famine Commemoration will honor New Orleans’ Irish and celebrate the triumph of Famine survivors in the face of tremendous adversity. Activities during the four day event will have a distinctly New Orleans flavor as the city’s Irish and Irish American community rally for this historic remembrance.
