SEMESTER LONG INSTITUTE 

Full Title: iPad Implementation Strategies for Students who are Blind and Low Vision in Regular Classrooms


This course is designed for Teachers of the Visually Impaired. Participants will explore and examine how to use an iPad effectively with students with visual impairments. The goal of the course is to successfully integrate iPad technology into regular classrooms with students who are low vision or blind and who are on or close to grade level. Each participant should be currently working with at least one student using print and one student using braille.


Please note that those attending the initial offering scheduled for July 28th, will be expected to participate in the semester long training institute which will conclude January 23rd, 2015.  You will not be permitted to take only a partial sampling of the training.  By participating in all instructional activities during the semester long institute, particpants will be offered CEUs in excess of 3.0 credits.  No partial CEUs will be awarded.


iPad Implementation Institute Schedule:

  • July 28, 2014: Face-to-Face Day 1 Review VoiceOver and Learn Apps for NC iPad Institute
  • September 12, 2014 : Face-to-Face Day 2 "Bluetooth Keyboard Commands with VoiceOver on the iPad"
  • October 9, 2014: Virtual Class Discussion #1 
  • November 7, 2014: Face-to-Face Day 3 "Refreshable Braille Display Commands with VoiceOver on the iPad"
  • December 4, 2014: Virtual Class Discussion #2
  • January 23, 2015: Face-to-Face Day 4 Class Presentations, New Apps & Wrap Up

Participants will be able to:

  1. Use the accessibility features of the iPad including low vision features and the Voiceover screen reader with a Bluetooth keyboard and a refreshable braille display.
  2. Use a core suite of apps that are commonly used by students in regular classrooms.
  3. Teach a student how to use the accessibility features of an iPad and the core suite of apps.
  4. Set expectations for the support required from general education teachers, administrators, and IT staff.
