Description

When Southern Californians think about “educational inequity,” would they think about Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander (AANHPI) kids? Families? Educators?

In the US, analyses of racial inequities in education typically focus on disparities between the experiences of African-American or Latin@/x kids (colloquially, “black and brown” kids) and their white peers. Framing the fight against educational inequities in this way renders invisible the needs and contributions of AANHPI communities in any of that work.

On January 26, 2019, our group of SoCal AANHPI educators will host a formal one-day summit titled Inward, Outward, Onward for AANHPI educators across Southern California, as a way to:

  • Build community across SoCal schools, districts, and regions, and across AANHPI subgroups (differing in ethnicity, class, migration status, etc.)

  • Deepen our collective understanding of AANHPI experiences with education, and the ways in which AANHPI experiences might be represented in education equity conversations

  • Create space to affirm and respond to needs and challenges experienced by participants

  • Set the stage for a future of community-building and collective action

Southern California can and should be a prime space for its kids and families to receive an equitable education -- and our region can’t evolve into that space while ignoring one of its largest populations.
