About Our Speaker: MK Stav Shaffir

Stav Shaffir is co-leader of the Democratic Union and head of the Green Movement. She was as a leader of the 2011 social protests that brought hundreds of thousands of Israelis to the streets and two years later was elected to the Labor Party as the youngest female Member of Knesset in Israel’s history.

In the 19th Knesset, Shaffir was a member of the Finance Committee and in the 20th Knesset, she founded and chaired the Special Committee for the Transparency and Accessibility of Government Information. In both terms she successfully exposed government corruption. She also advocates for people with disabilities.

Shaffir’s served in the Air Force in the IDF and attended City University of London where she completed a BA in Sociology and Journalism. She then returned to Israel and earned a MA in History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas from Tel Aviv University.

About Our Sponsor: The Media Line

The Media Line is America's news agency featuring independent, complete and contextual coverage of the Middle East. Since its inception in 2000, The Media Line has remained unique in its dedication to the tenets of classical journalism and as a source for creative cutting-edge programming that deals head-on with the issues of the day. The Media Line's veteran journalists cover the Middle East from Islamabad to Idlib; Jeddah to Jerusalem; Ramallah to Rafah...

As the Second Intifada was winding down in the latter 1990s, journalists were still denied the access imperative for quality reporting. TML founder Felice Friedson created the Mideast Press Club, bringing Israeli and Palestinian journalists together in a professional forum. TML's press and policy student program now boasts more than a dozen participating colleges and universities offering academic credit upon completion of this outstanding mentorship opportunity. The empowerment of women of the Mideast directing journalistic institutions is subject of still another program of the Media Line. Don't miss the popular Mideast Streets -- the platform that covers events throughout the region and invites the public to participate. Check it all out on TMLs renowned website, themedialine.org.

Our Member of Knesset this week will be in conversation with Charles Byblelezer, Managing Editor ofThe Media Line. Charles is a veteran newsman who has covered the Middle East for more than a decade. Noted for his penetrating commentary along with his solid, factual reporting, Bybelezer is a rising star in the world of news coverage from Israel and the Middle East, carried with increasing frequency in print and on international radio and television.
