About our Speaker: Avigdor Liberman

Avigdor Liberman was born in Moldova in 1958. In 1978, when Liberman was on the verge of completing an academic degree in water engineering, his family immigrated to Israel. They settled in Jaffa, where Liberman was sent to the Kibbutz Ulpan to learn Hebrew. He proceeded to the University of Beer Sheba’s pre-academic program, where he met his future wife, Ella.

Upon graduation of the program, Liberman moved to Jerusalem, where he studied international relations and Slavic studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Following his marriage and military service, Lieberman lived in Jerusalem, and served as the Secretary of the National Workers’ Union in Jerusalem. His next position was as a member of the Board of Directors of Economic Corporation of Jerusalem.

It was at this period that Liberman met Binyamin Netanyahu, and together they won the leadership of the Likud party and later on, the leadership of the State. As Director General of the Likud party, Liberman rebuilt the party and helped solve its severe financial troubles. After winning the general elections, Liberman was appointed Director General of the Prime Minister’s office. Two years later Liberman took a hiatus from politics and turned to the private business sector.

In 1999, Liberman founded the Yisrael Beytenu (Israel is our Home) Party and succeeded from the start, garnering four parliamentary seats. Liberman served as Minister of National Infrastructure in the Sharon government. In this capacity Liberman advanced the seawater desalination project, passed the national gas bill and addressed many other issues with a long term impact on the future of Israel. During the 2003 elections, Yisrael Beytenu joined the Moledet and Tekuma parties, a union that yielded seven parliamentary seats. Liberman was appointed Minister of Transport, and dealt with several issues, among them the privatization of El-Al, privatization of the Port Authority and development of the Israel Train infrastructure. Avigdor Liberman was a long standing member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. In the 2006 general elections, Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu Party won close to 10% of the vote, attaining 11 members of Knesset, and becoming the fifth largest party in Knesset. Liberman withdrew from the Coalition in January 2008 in protest against the Annapolis Convention.

In the 2009 elections, for the 18th Knesset, Yisrael Beytenu attained 15 mandates, making it the third largest party in Israel. Avigdor Liberman was named Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, positions he held throughout the 18th Knesset In the 2013 elections, Yisrael Beytenu ran on a joint list with the Likud and attained 31 mandates, 11 for members of Yisrael Beytenu. Avigdor Liberman was named Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. In November 2013 Avigdor Liberman returned to his position as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the 2015 elections, for the 20th Knesset, Yisrael Beytenu attained 6 mandates. In June 2016 Yisrael Beytenu joined the coalition and Avigdor Liberman became the Minister of Defense, the post which he just quit due to tensions with the Prime Minister over the recent Gaza flare up. Liberman remains the Chairman of the Yisrael Beytenu Party and a Member of Knesset in the Opposition. Avigdor and Ella Liberman live in Nokdim and have three children and three grandchildren.

Our nonprofit organization was established in 2009 to provide a challenging, thought-provoking and intellectual discussion non-partisan platform for the young adult Tel Aviv International and Sabra community. There are an increasing number of motivated young professionals who are choosing to make Tel Aviv their home. The Salon provides this community a unique forum to learn about, debate and discuss Israeli, Jewish and world politics, history, media, economics, social, cultural and environmental issues with a diverse range of engaging international decision makers and the leading influencers on our society.
