Where: Mills College - 5000 MacArthur Blvd. Lucy Stern Hall 101, Oakland, CA
The San Francsico Bay Area Chapter of BetterInvesting will be presenting an informative morning featuring six workshops and a panel discussion by the San Francsico BetterInvesting Model Club. For those new to BetterInvesting or who need a refresher, The Stock Selection: the Basics will be offered. Additionally, the Live Stock to Study workshop will give attendees an opportunity to see how using the SSG helps put it all together when researching companies to buy or sell. Exploring the Low Price of the SSG will focus on providing alternative Low Price options. Investing in REITs and The Energy Sector are two workshops that will provide insights into investing in areas you may never have considered. Details below.
9:00 - 9:55
Investing in REITs (Craig Braemer)
We will discuss what REITs are, how they might fit into a portfolio, look at current valuations and consider ways to value these securities. As an asset class that tracks real estate, this class has done well versus stocks over time. Did you know there are over 10 sub-segments within REITs? Come learn more.
9:00 - 9:55 Part I
The Stock Selection Guide: The Basics, Part I & II (Joanne Willcox)
These workshops will look at each section of the SSG as well as the key judgment areas; future high and low PE, selected low price, earnings per share growth, and how they all work together to help identify good companies at reasonable prices. The five sections of the SSG will be explained and why they are important. We will complete an SSG as a group using the updated Online SSG tools. The class will be followed by a Stock To Study Class.
Investing in Energy (Craig Braemer)
With current energy prices so low, should you be adding something from this sector in your portfolio today? We will explore this question by studying the energy sector and help you understand this sector better to help you decide if you want to invest into the many industries or portions of the energy sector.
11:10 - 12:05
Exploring Alternatives to the SSG’s Low Price Options (Harriet Chan)
Not satisfied with the choices on the SSG section 4B? Attend this class to find alternatives for estimating the low price for section 4B. This workshop will cover SMA (simple moving average) on charts and other simple technical indicators. You will learn techniques investors have shared about selecting a low price for the ‘other’ choice in section 4B. Learn how to arrive at what might be a better low price for section 4B.
11:10 - 12:05
Live Stock To Study (Sue Larsen)
This workshop will walk you through an SSG, giving you an in-depth look at the various judgment sections of the SSG. This is an interactive session with lots of practical discussion about how to fill out an SSG. This is a great follow-up to the Stock Selection Basic workshops. Put your new knowledge to work!
12:10 - 12:20
