Investigating Energy Transfer and Energy Efficiency - A Hands-on Workshop
Led by: Fernand Brunschwig
Click here to watch a 2 min video about the workshop
Come experience a practical and fun way to make the concept of energy more meaningful to students in terms of their daily lives along with a viable activity to apply the concept authentically - light bulb efficiency! The workshop will begin, in “student mode,” with a hands-on experience using energy “technology trading cards” that build a clearer understanding of energy’s role, specifically energy transfers involved in technology. We will carry out further experiments on energy transfer, including genuine data collection, with actual measurements of the energy flowing through various types of light bulbs. These experiments (which utilize qualitative and/or quantitative methods) are the basis for thinking about energy efficiency in daily life, leading (if time permits) to a preview of an authentic culminating activity; an Energy Audit to identify how to use energy more efficiently at home or at school.
You will learn to build deeper understanding by using whiteboards and multiple representations to report findings in discussion with colleagues. Finally, in “teacher mode,” you will reflect on the pedagogy and discuss the experience with fellow teachers. You will take away the Technology Trading Cards, a copy of the Home Energy Audit Activity, and an outline of the workshop activities.
These activities are usable with 7th through 12th grade students in a variety of STEM courses as a way to relate the NGSS crosscutting concept of energy to your students’ daily lives. Both Middle School and High School science teachers will find this workshop useful. Little or no content background is expected. By the way, teachers who attend our “Energy is Energy” Workshop on November 6th will find this workshop especially useful because they can apply what they learned about how to teach the concept of energy consistently across disciplines.
Pizza lunch for all at 1 pm!
Note: Please sign up for ONLY 1 workshop on December 3rd NOT BOTH. As these two workshops are both 3 hours and run simultaneously from 10am to 1pm in separate rooms at Teachers College.
