What you'll learn in this voice over class:
Voice over isn’t for everyone. Success is a mix of good business practices and professional performance. Is it right for you? And are you right for it?
Find out, in this fun session. A top working pro first explains the 27 types of VO, home studios, rates, agents, and more. Then take a turn at the mic. We’ll run through some basics, try different things, and assess your potential. If you seem marketable, we’ll tailor a plan, match you with coaches, and one of our Voice Over Advisors will work with you to fine tune it all to your schedule and budget.
It’s the practical way to determine if you and your voice have what it takes.
First, it’s important to know if this industry is a good fit for you – because there’s a lot to learn and do in the VO business besides “talk.” We’ll begin with a comprehensive overview, giving you practical insight, including the industry’s benefits and also the negatives.
We'll tell you if your voice fits into the industry’s needs, and if so, how. (It’s not so much about your voice, as how you can use it, where you can market it, and your ability to learn / take direction / respond to direction.) Everyone gets time at the mic. We’ll run through some basic pointers and principles, and the coach will work with you as you read in various styles and script genres.
After the class, the instructors will give you an honest assessment, in writing. If you appear marketable and right for the business, we'll develop a practical game plan for you and select appropriate coaches, based on your voice, interests, and budget.
WE'LL BE SUPPORTIVE, YET HONEST AND CANDID.
This class is designed specifically for newcomers. And it includes 5 critical insights that you’ll need in order to put your VO career on a firm foundation:
Gain a general comprehension of the industry
Learn the 27 types of VO the industry presents
Gain a sense of direction
Hear common mistakes that keep many aspiring voice actors from reaching their full potential
Become able to make an informed decision about your next steps
This class is the practical and comfortable way to expose yourself to the full range of opportunities. If there’s an opportunity for you, the instructors will tell you, realistically, what path to take. They are polite, but candid. Not everyone makes the cut.
THE 3-PART PROCESS:
1. The Investigate Voice Over Class starts with a fun, exciting 4-hour session.
Your coach will outline the entire industry and sample your voice-over performance, as you take a quick turn at the microphone. The class helps pinpoints your most marketable genres (audiobook, animation, commercial, documentary, etc.), and provides an in-depth understanding of what skills are required to be successful in voice over.
Specifically, you will be assessed on 3 attributes:
Your voice (do casting agents hire your type voice?)
Your delivery (do casting agents hire your delivery style?)
Your marketability (comfort, desire, passion, ability, excitement… is this for you?)
Each class is small, with just enough participants to give you a sense of how you stand among others, and to show your coach how you perform in front of others. In the class, the coach will be constructive, supportive and non-judgmental. The point is to guide and evaluate you, not to embarrass anyone.
2. After the voice over class, your coach prepares a detailed and candid written evaluation.
This report will cover:
Voice type – Is your voice distinctive? Neutral? In need of training?
Delivery – How well do you read aloud? Can you vary your delivery?
Innate ability – Some people come by performance naturally, others need more training.
Training – How much training will you need to become successful? How much related training do you already have?
How quickly did you pick things up in the voice over class?
Marketability – What genres (audiobook, animation, commercial, documentary, etc.) are you best suited for in voice over? (In this voice over class, you'll learn that there are more than two dozen VO genres.)
Potential – Are you likely to find enough work to pursue VO full-time? Or should you consider it part-time? Or maybe you and voice performing aren't a good match.
What kind of demo(s) would you need to become successful?
3. Then, speak openly with one of our Voice Over Advisors.
Review your performance with them. Discuss opportunities. Using this evaluation report, we will phone you, at a pre-arranged time. You will receive our honest assessment of what path you should (or should not) take. In this conversation, the Advisor will candidly review your coach’s evaluation report with you, and discuss the sensible next step: Move forward or not. If moving forward makes sense, the Advisor will help you map out a plan of action, based on your budget, your schedule, and your goals.
