Intuitive painting is a process that invites us out of our heads into embodied presence. It is about reconnecting with your beautiful, authentic self when you, like all the other kids, could draw anything, back before you learned that you weren't an artist. Art-making in community has ancient roots as a way to strengthen bonds, celebrate, heal and connect with Spirit.

This form of creativity is unique in that there are no lessons on how to paint and absolutely no comments from others about what you make. It's the felt experience during the process that matters, not the paint on paper result. We play, feel and paint; entering the healing waters of mystery where we find our deepest selves.

We'll wade into this workshop with some gentle movement and meditation followed by information and a guided experience of creating art in this way. Ideally, you will have a few sheets of plain white paper, 3 or more colors of inexpensive paint, a few paintbrushes and some water for rinsing. Some alternatives are pastels, paintboxes, markers, paint sticks, etc. In a pinch, use your notebook paper and a pen or pencil.

Please note: The HPG workshop series is approved by the D.C. Board of Social Work for ten 1.5 hour workshops from Sept - June for a total of 15 CEUs if you attend all workshops. CEU certificates are emailed upon request in July. There is a requirement of 2 CEU credit hours or more for a certificate.

About the presenter:

Sue Holyoke Johnston is a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW), registered yoga teacher (RYT), and certified Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine Practitioner (Center for Mind-Body Medicine). She was an Instructor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and was the Mind-Body Medicine Program Coordinator in internal medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Sue has training in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. She has appeared on CBS News Nightwatch, The Diane Rehm Show, and Weekend Edition with Susan Stamberg. She is co-author of Pregnancy Bedrest: A Guidebook for the Pregnant Woman and Her Family (Henry Holt).
