Introduction to Woodcut Printmaking: From Carving to Printing

Saturday September 16 11am-3pm

SUTRA global imports is pleased to host our longtime artist friend, Lynne Valiquette, for her first workshop in our maker space "Rendezvous" !

Woodcut in an ancient relief printing technique in which a design is carved into a block of wood. The surface of the block is inked, paper or fabric is laid on top, and then pressure is applied to transfer the image to the paper. The areas that have been cut away remain white, the inked surface is the color of the ink.

Each participant will carve a simple original image on the surface of a small birch plywood block. The block will be inked with a brayer (roller) and the back of a wooden spoon will be used to apply the pressure needed to transfer the image to paper. It’s as simple as that! Multiple copies of the image can, at that point, be produced.

The workshop fee is $45, payable at the time of registration; use the ticket link to register and reserve your spot online. A materials fee of $25 will cover a take-home set of carving tools, a woodblock, paper, and ink; this fee is payable directly to the workshop presenter on the day of the workshop. Please note: workshop size is limited to 8 and you will leave with a complete set of carving tools. BYO bag lunch; refreshments will be offered (drinks).

SUTRA also has woodblocks from India, greeting card blanks and a small selection of banners/flags for purchase.
