Event Schedule:

Class 1: Learn the Tools 7/11, 5:30- 8:30pm

Students will learn the proper and safe use of many different hand chisels, carving knives, and the flex-shaft.

Class 2: Play with the Tools 7/18, 5:30- 8:30pm

Students will use the skills they learned in the previous class to start on a project of their choice under the guidance of the instructor.

Class 3: Finish your peice 7/25, 5:30- 8:30pm

In this final class, students will continue to carve and may even spend time sanding or polishing their piece.

Class Description:

In this three-week introductory class, students will experiment with many different methods of carving wood using traditional and modern tools. Students will spend time getting to know Southeast Asian carving chisels, European chisels, and Flex-Shaft Carving Tools, and use them to create intricate decorative work and larger sculptural pieces.

Class Goals:

Students will leave this class with basic and safe operating knowledge of many different wood carving tools, including Southeast Asian chisels, European style chisels, and flex-shaft carving tools.


Students must be at least 18 years of age.


Students should wear shop appropriate clothes - closed-toe shoes, no dangly jewelry, or straps, and long hair should be tied back. A materials fee of $30 is included in the ticket price of this class.

Class Minimum:

This class will not run with fewer than 4 students.

Instructor Biography:

Drew Hatzung has been woodworking since childhood. From building a working model of an escalator in the third grade for "word-of-the-day", to carpentry, cabinetry, furniture building, and more recently the full customization of a vintage Airstream travel trailer. Drew was the first maker chosen to represent the Artisan's Asylum in the Makerspace Cultural Exchange Residency Program, as a teacher, student, and colaborating artist in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
