Description

Introduction To Knifemaking

Bladesmith Jeff Helmes will be teaching an introductory knife making course at Two Smiths. This week long intensive course teaches students about the properties of carbon steel and how to apply that knowledge to the hot and cold working processes involved in making a forged knife.

Students will:

  • Forge a blade
  • Heat treat that blade (normalise, harden and temper)
  • Cut and shape copper or brass fittings
  • Sand and file the beveled edge
  • Hand polish the blade
  • Shape and fit a wooden handle
  • Assemble all of the components
  • As an added bonus, students will also be given the opportunity to forge weld a small Damascus steel billet

As can be seen on his facebook page (Jeff Helmes Bladesmith), Jeff’s extensive knowledge of bladesmithing consists also of inlay, carved bone and antler, leather work, chasing and repoussé, filigree and vacuum casting. Mid-week Jeff will spend an evening talking about these processes and showing images of commissions he has worked on over the past several years including his most recent work for the Royal Ontario Museum.

Students will leave with a completed knife and a small forge welded Damascus billet.

Classes run from Monday to Friday 9:00am-5:00pm
