Course Description: A Basic IV Therapy Refresher Program
NEW! Clinical Practice hours included for CHS Teamamtes
This updated version of the IV Therapy Workshop includes 2.5 hours of class time as well as an optional additional 2 hours of practical experience with the Vascular Access (IV Therapy) Team for teammates of Carolinas HealthCare System.
Who Should Enroll? RNs and LPNs, other health care professionals with IV Therapy in the scope of practice.(The clinical portion is open only for Carolinas HealthCare System teammates.)
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, you will be able to
Relate the distinguishing factor that differentiates the peripheral IV line from the central IV line
Discuss the reasons why veins in the lower extremities and on the flexor surfaces of the joints are not routinely used as IV sites
Describe nursing measures that may be used to make a patient more comfortable physically and emotionally prior to having an IV started
Demonstrate various methods to promote dilation of the vein
Relate factors to be considered when selecting the IV site
Relate factors to be considered when selecting the type and size of the IV catheter
Demonstrate aseptic techniques used when inserting and IV catheter
Discuss information documented regarding the IV start on the appropriate medical record form
Describe common complications of IV therapy

Time: 8:30 am - 11:00 am (in class)
(CHS Teammates: Clinical practice hours will be scheduled with the IV/Vascular Access Team within 3 months of the class.)

Carolinas HealthCare System Teammates $ 185.00 (Includes 2 hours clinical practice)
This course is eligible for EdAssist tuition reimbursement for Carolinas HealthCare System teammates.
Note: Refund requests must be postmarked at least two (2) business days prior to the first day of class. Fees paid will be refunded by check and mailed within 30 days of request. A portion of the tuition may be retained by the College.

Continuing Education Credits:
0.25 CEUS (class only)
0.45 CEUs (with clinical practice hours)
This course has been approved for 0.45 CEUs (equivalent to 4.5 contact hours) from the Carolinas College of Health Sciences. Each 4.5-hour session can accommodate 12 participants.
This is a continuing education class and does not certify or give you the expertise to perform IV Therapy without the additional hands-on training defined by your professional scope of practice and facility. Please check with your professional association (certifying agency, licensing board) to confirm.
