The U.S Health Care System is Changing

The US health care system is in a time of unprecedented change at the local, state, and national levels. The expansion of insurance coverage, the shift from payment rewarding volume of services delivered to alternative payment models based on the quality of outcomes achieved, and changes in financial incentives are providing critical opportunities to focus attention on improvingpopulation health.

The HST Webinar Series

This webinar series will explore the history of health system change and describe key drivers and trends that influence current decision making among the major players in the field (health insurance plans, employers, and clinical providers).

Webinar 1: Introduction to Health System Transformation and the Health Insurance Market, will provide an overview of the health care landscape, including the major insurance types, stakeholders, patient population characteristics, and trends.

Speaker:

William “Bill” Custer, PhD

Dr. Custer is an Associate Professor for the J. Mack Robinson College of Business and the Director for Health Services research at Georgia State University. Prior to joining the Robinson College of Business Dr. Custer in 1995 served as director of research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute and as an economist in the American Medical Association’s Center for Health Policy Research. Dr. Custer has authored numerous articles on the health care delivery system, insurance, retirement income security, and employee benefits, and is cited frequently in the Atlanta press on these topics. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Risk Management and Insurance.

Laura Seeff, MD

Dr. Laura Seeff is the Director of the Office of Health Systems Collaboration in the Office of the Associate Director for Policy at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this position, she is supporting CDC’s focus on maximizing collaboration between public health and the health care sector, including efforts to broaden coverage of prevention and population health and advance strategic priorities emerging from the transforming U.S. health system.
