Description

Course Description - This is a non-credit, hands-on, practical course designed for students and community members who want to explore a business idea, start a business for the first time, or grow / expand an existing business. The emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of performing a competitor analysis, estimating an accurate sales forecast, creating and writing a marketing plan, determining your necessary (lean start-up or bootstrapping) expenses, and write a complete business plan worthy of submission to an investor or bank. The class meets for 15 weeks during TCC's fall semester. It costs $255 plus the cost of the book and meets Thursday nights at 6 p.m. at TCC'c Center for Innovation downtown.

Objectives/Learning Outcome(s)/Major Topics

1) The students will develop an entrepreneurial mind-set by analyzing their intended business vs. four of their closest competitors using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis.

2) The students will use the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) using the Internet and other sales and marketing tools to appropriately forecast their annual sales.

3) The students will identify their customers (their target market).

4) The students will study low cost marketing strategies and choose the right mix to reach their target market with an appropriate frequency.

5) The students will write their complete sales and marketing plan.

6) The students will identify a low cost, lean start-up expense methodology to save their scarce resources (time and money).

7) The students will learn about start-up and small business capital sources.

8) The students will determine if their business is a “go” or “no-go” according to their analysis and their level of risk.

9) The students will then write their business plan using proper business English and grammar in a format that is acceptable to an investor or banker.
