Description

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
Tana Quincy

12 Sessions >> Thursdays, September 15–December 8
6:30–9:30pm, Studio 14, $530

This course will lay a foundation for developing skills in observational drawing through a variety of subject matter, media and techniques. Lectures and projects will envelop the scope of historical and contemporary drawing styles. Gesture, contour line, linear perspective, value (form), composition, and texture are just a few of the topics explored through short and long term exercises. Focus will be placed on accurately and confidently translating 3-dimensional subject matter onto a 2-dimensional piece of paper. The language for critique will be provided and practiced as we engage in formal evaluation of finished work.
____

Tana Quincy's work re-examines the use of utilitarian materials from the vantage point of a painter. Her unconventional approach is as much about acquiring new forms of media and reinventing process as it is about composition and mark-making. Her paintings explore the dialogue between substrate and surface. Quincy has had several solo exhibitions in the Midwestern United States, and has shown nationally from New York City to San Francisco. After receiving her MFA in figurative painting from the New York Academy of Art, she taught studio art at the college level for four years. She currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.

FAQs

What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?
Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. Materials lists are available approximately two weeks prior to the course start date. Visit the SFAI website here, click on your course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" link underneath the course dates. If you have any questions regarding materials, please contact Public Education Staff.

What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?
All classes meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus on the SFAI website.

SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.

SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
SFAI Public Education Staff are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the Public Education program, or our courses. We are in the office Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Call us at: 415.749.4554 or e-mail: publiceducation@sfai.edu
