Description

Learn data science with our Intro to Data Science workshop.

Cover the basics of data through data manipulation, scientific analysis and communication.

Join us for our Data Science workshop on January 28th, 2018; featuring Martin Jetton with 30+ years of advanced supply chain analytics, predictive analytics, and statistical consulting experience

The first part of the workshop we will talk about the Basic Data Science process (below) and how it relates to skills needed.

We will cover problem definition and problems with problem definitions relative to data. We will talk about hard constraints and soft constraints on solutions.

Skills of a data scientist:https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2017/8/219605-data-science/fulltext

Illustrates data science as an intersection of skills and competencies:

data science = {statistics informatics computing communication sociology management | data domain thinking }

We will talk about how the skills demanded relate to the business data and business domain knowledge.

In each of the skill areas we will cover what is good and what is bad within the context of data science. We will discuss what are good statistics and bad statistics and what are good informatics and bad informatics, what are good computing and bad computing, etc

The 2nd half of the day we will cover Data Science predictive/prescriptive model development, deployment and management.

Predictive/Prescriptive Modeling Steps

  1. Problem Definition; defining the business problem to be modeled
  2. Data Extraction; extract the data needed for the modeling
  3. Sampling; build tripartite data sets; training, test & validation
  4. Variable Modification/Grouping; create new variables from data
  5. Variable Selection; explore data and identify best variables for model.
  6. Model Construction; build model using problem definition and variables.
  7. Model Evaluation/Selection; compare multiple of models and select based prediction accuracy.
  8. Model Scoring Code; “Package” up data extraction, variable grouping, and model scoring code for production.
  9. Model Management; Regular model evaluation for accuracy and changes in model effectiveness.
