Event description
An introduction to how community planning shapes the fabric of our neighborhoods, our communities, and our lives.

About this Event

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:

Our lives and communities are shaped through the everyday lived experiences of our surrounding physical spaces (i.e. our neighborhoods). Great neighborhoods host a mix of uses in order to provide for our daily need to live, work, play, worship, dine, shop, and talk to each other. Planners, from land use to transportation, sculpt the way our communities form, interact, and develop over time.

"Introduction to Community Planning" is designed to introduce attendees to planning and growth management in Florida from all angles (e.g. urban design, economic development, land use, transportation, long-range planning, etc.) and through a historical, contemporaneous, and future lens. Planning challenges of the future (e.g. the continued decline of brick and mortar stores), decision-making processes, and engagement opportunities for the community will all be explored.

Attendees will leave with an understanding of core planning concepts and sub-specializations, as well as how community planning relates to them. This presentation has been organized by the Health in All Policies (HiAP) team in Pinellas County.

Refreshments will be served from 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM, and the presentation will commence at 8:30 AM.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Ben Ziskal is the Assistant Community Development Administrator and Director of Planning & Development Services for the City of Pinellas Park. As an urban planning and economic development professional, Ben has amassed 12+ years of experience in a variety of areas of municipal government. Before Pinellas Park, he served as the Director of Economic Development for the City of Margate (FL), where he was responsible for the management and strategic direction in the fast growing Fort Lauderdale region of over 2 million people. Through Ben's leadership, the City adopted a 1,200 acre mixed-use Transit Oriented Corridor to facilitate the development of the Margate City Center, incentivizing development through tools such as tax increment financing, brownfield site redevelopment, streamlined permitting, and new urbanism design standards.

In addition to urban planning and economic development, Ben has worked in the areas of improving green spaces, strategic planning, advancing public art programs, destination branding, increasing public transportation programs, and finding solutions for traffic congestion.

Born in Michigan, Ben earned his Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning and Development from Ball State University and his Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University. Also, Ben proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserve from 2003 to 2009 and was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant. Ben is dually certified as an AICP and CEcD.
