Event description

Description

Would you like to sip your brew every morning out of a beautiful ceramic mug that you made yourself, or arrange flower in your personally hand sculptured vase? Then our Introduction to Ceramics class is what you need. Ryan, a recent graduate in three-dimensional design, is an accomplished artist who will be instructing this relaxed two-part class.

The workshops will take you through the process from beginning to end of how to build and decorate ceramics without the use of machinery.

This is one of many classic ceramic production methods used to create a variety of objects from sculpture to home wear. Throughout this class, participants will learn how to handle clay from raw material to a finalised decorative or sculptural vessel.

What methods will be used?

  • Hand rolling clay

  • Imprinting decorative patterns

  • Learning correct handling and drying of clay

  • Cutting and fixing panels of clay to build vessels

  • Finishing techniques

  • Firing temperatures

  • Decoration and under glaze painting

  • Glazing and firing

Part one: building - 12/05/19

Learning one of the many ceramic techniques used for generations to hand build home-ware and vessels. Within the 3 hours of this first workshop you will be learning how to hand build, imprint decoration and finalise a number of vessel-like objects that will then be fired. All participants will get the chance to create a number of items with various designs and surface decorations that can be painted in part two of the workshop series. At the end of this workshop everyone should feel confident in their new skill and be able to further practice what they have learnt.

Part two: decoration - 19/05/19

After all the objects have been fired we will be working on hand decoration and design. Everyone will be able to utilize under-glaze colour to paint the previously produced vessels over the course of this 2-hour workshop. After this, the work will go through the final firing process and everyone will be able to collect all of their fully realised ceramics.

This workshop series hopes to inspire people interested in the material to give it a go and learn parts of this amazing material. The end results of the program will provide all with the knowledge to hand build and finalise ceramic products. You will also be able to take home not only the skills but also the finalised outcomes of the workshop.
