Description

What - Over two full Saturdays, this foundational course gives developers the tools to understand and create their own private blockchains, the first step in developing a fully functioning blockchain application.

What will I have built at the end of this course?
At the end of the course, you will have:
▪ A functional 3 node blockchain network
▪ A function to add transactions to the network and update blockchain ledgers
▪ 1-2 smart contracts that automatically execute business logic
▪ A list of management commitments required from blockchain node administrators

Course Outline

Day 1 Morning – Blockchain Quickstart

▪Learn to set up blockchain in the cloud which you can begin using immediately to store and retrieve information.

▪ An introduction to key blockchain concepts, blockchain architectures, and components of a functioning blockchain network.
▪ Set up a functional blockchain network in 30 minutes.
▪ Configuring your local environment for blockchain development.

Day 1 Afternoon – CRUD operations in a Blockchain

▪ Learn to store and retrieve from the blockchain network.
▪ Query data from your private blockchain network.
▪ Update data in your blockchain network.
▪ Create a new identity (user) within the blockchain network.
▪ Interface CRUD operations with external applications.

Day 2 Morning – Contracts and “Smart” Contracts

▪ Learn to how to create smart contracts.
▪ What are smart contracts?
▪ Create a series of contracts between a number of users on the network.
▪ Evolve your simple, one - time contracts into automated “smart” contracts.
▪ Build signed transactions that can be validated by the network.

Day 2 Afternoon – Transaction Validations and Node Administration

▪ Learn about ways to maintain a blockchain network.
▪ Validate and commit transactions across the network.
▪ Explain the components of a blockchain node to a prospective participant.
▪ Add new nodes to the blockchain network.
▪ Maintain consensus and validity across the nodes of an active blockchain.
▪ Administer and manage individual nodes within a blockchain network.

Who - This course has been specifically designed for developers and Fintech entrepreneurs looking to incorporate blockchain technology into their existing applications, or create new blockchain-specific applications.

As such, course participants should:

  • have a firm grasp on at least one of these programming languages: Java, NodeJS and Go.
  • have experience in either Ubuntu 16 LTS (although any Debian-based Linux distribution will suffice).
  • have a working knowledge of modern software concepts such as APIs, source control, and virtual machines.
  • own a laptop running MacOS, although a Linux-based O/S will also suffice. If your laptop runs Windows 7 or above, allocate an additional 2-3 hours for the set up of your development environment.

When - The course will run over two consecutive full-day Saturday sessions (2nd December, 9th December), from 10:00-18:00.

How much - The general enrollment fee for the course is HKD $16,000. Early enrollment will be available to select members for HKD $14,000 and will be available up to 14 days before the course start date. IMIT also have a series of grants which will be available for certain applicants.
