Presenter: Shannon Magee and Denis Myers

Session Outline & Objectives:

"This workshop is for teachers that are new to Blackboard Learn or need a refresher for the upcoming semester. Throughout this workshop, not only will you learn many of the tools and features that Blackboard has to offer, you will also learn the pedagogy of online distance and blended learning. Further, you will be provided with strategies on how to implement web-based courses in a blended environment or with distance learners.

Blackboard offers tools that will help you to engage your students in online distance and blended learning. You will learn how to navigate your way through Blackboard and develop an understanding of how courses are specially structured for online learners. Learn how to edit and create new content for your students. Engage in Blackboard’s collaborative tools such as blogs, wikis, journals, discussions and groups. Learn how to communicate with students through internal messages, emails and announcements.

In addition, you will learn how to personalize your Blackboard course – create a fun, inviting homepage, add a class banner, create and upload videos or presentations, use badges as a motivational tool. Learn how to use the Adaptive Release tool to appropriately pace your course based on individual student needs. Then, learn about how to assess student learning through assignments, quizzes, tests and portfolios. You will be introduced to SafeAssign (plagiarism checker) and how to navigate your way through Blackboard’s online grade book and retention centre.
