Introduction to Bitcoin: Disrupting Money
Much like the internet disrupted conventional communications media 20 years ago, Bitcoin has the potential to revolutionize money on a grand scale—the way we think about it, use it, move it around, and regulate it. And, just like the internet’s impact on media 20 years ago, there’s not a straightforward 1-to–1 mapping of our current “conventional” understanding of money to the one that is to come. To understand this alternative currency, we need to think alternatively.

This seminar is an overview of Bitcoin, and brings attendees up to speed with the current state of the art. We also show how Bitcoin asserts new answers to the fundamental questions of what money can be and what forms it can take. We’ll cover its impact on monetary systems, and we’ll also look at what other conventional networks and businesses have the potential to be transformed, from security systems to internet infrastructure to ubiquitous identity.

This workshop will address:

  • An overview of Bitcoin: What is it? where did it come from, and why it is so compelling?
  • Bitcoin practical: How to get started
  • How Bitcoin works: Basic structure and function
  • The current state of the Bitcoin economy
  • Other “alt coin” currencies
  • Applying the Bitcoin model to other network systems: Markets, identity registries, security systems, etc.
