Event description
If you’ve always been fascinated by bees, or just a honey-holic you will definitely want to join this Intro to bee workshop

About this Event

Throughout the workshop, John our resident beekeeper, will be chatting about all the basic bee information. This is an informal workshop to learn about bees whilst in a friendly environment. You’ll be learning about the difference between wasps and bees, the different types of bees, how you can make your garden a more bee friendly place and how your average hive works. If your enthusiastic about bringing more bees into your green space then Johns practical knowledge of plant choice and nesting sites will make it simple to understand.

Our Hamilton Square location currently has two active bee hives on its roof which you will be able to get up close and personal with. That means understanding hives, honey production and extraction along with the proper safety measures of getting suited and booted in preparation.

We will spend a lot of the workshop helping you to make a few items that you can take home with you. First of all, you will get the opportunity to make a bee hotel, this is a great addition to any outdoor space and encourages more buzzing buddies into your garden. Then using the wax from beehives you will be shown how to make wax wraps which are an eco-friendly sustainable alternative to clingfilm. We’ll also make sure you’ve got some seeds that when planted will beguile the bees and some honey samples from our hives that are perfect for breakfast brunch, and brinner!

As our hives are based on the roof which will require access via a ladder. For anyone with limited mobility or a nervous disposition we would recommend staying on the ground and watching via our video link. This activity is weather dependent, no one, not even bees appreciate their roof being lifted off if its raining, so be aware that we can only do so if the conditions are just right.
