Description

Introduction to Autism Resources and Services for Professionals is a 2.0 hour workshop aimed at professionals working in the social service field and was designed by a multidisciplinary group of providers from our clinic to provide an introductory working knowledge of the various supports and programs that exist in the Houston area and how to access them.

It covers the following topics:

  • Overview of autism - what it is, how it is diagnosed and current statistics
  • How/where to obtain a medical diagnosis
  • The difference between a medical diagnosis and a special education eligibility code
  • The importance of managing caregiver stress and taking time for self-care
  • Early intervention services
  • Introduction to navigating special education in public schools
  • Evidence-based interventions and therapies, including Applied Behavioral Analysis and how to access them
  • Medicaid Waivers, Social Security and other financial support programs
  • Being an effective advocate
  • Research opportunities for families
