Description

Introduction to 3D Scanning and Data Processing is an entry level workshop open to anyone interested in learning the basics of capturing 3D models using 3D scanning technology and processing the captured data using freely available tools. Participants will be shown the end to end process of capturing quality scans using the Occipital Structure Sensor 3D Scanner and mesh data processing and cleanup using Meshlab and Meshmixer. The workshop will cover common pitfalls and best practices when using the technology for a variety of applications such as scanning body parts, large objects, and shiny objects.

This workshop will be primarily computer based and does NOT go over machine operations. To learn how to operate the laser cutter, 3d printers, or CNC machines you must sign up for one of the workshops that covers basic operations.

What to expect:

This workshop is for beginners to 3D scanning technology and mesh data processing for a variety of applications such as 3D printing and models for virtual environments. It assumes no prior knowledge of scanning technologies or data processing techniques and will likely be very basic if you already have significant working experience with either. Participants can expect a hands on and project based learning approach.

Expected outcomes:

- Feel comfortable capturing objects with the Occipital Structure Sensor 3D Scanner
- Understand the basics of working with mesh data with Meshlab
- Be able to fix, repair, remesh, decimate, and export useful meshes using Meshmixer
- Understand and be capable of creating files for 3D printing and/or virtual environments

Pre-requisites:

Experience with CAD packages such as Rhino, Solidworks, Inventor, or Fusion 360 useful but not required. We will be working with Meshlab and Meshmixer so any prior experience with these tools is beneficial.

Participants are welcome but not required to bring a laptop running at least Windows 10 or MacOS and a preinstalled copy of Meshlab and Meshmixer. Instruction will be given on a machine running MacOS. If you do not have a laptop, Inworks has laptops running Windows and the latest versions of the tools.
