Introducing characters in a work of fiction is both thrilling and challenging. Whether in first person or third person, how will the writer create a unique, new, and engaging personality for the reader? What combination of words, action, and description will make the novel’s characters stand out? How can we move beyond describing our hero as ‘lanky and good-looking’ to something more emotionally resonant?

In this workshop, we’ll look at published examples as we discuss some of the best ways to memorably and distinctly introduce a character. We’ll analyze various authors’ techniques and then put those techniques to practice by introducing our own new characters in ways that grab the readers’ attention and set up the story. Bring paper and pen or laptop and prepare to discover different methods to transform generic characters into unforgettable ones.
