In this class we will survey common herbal plant families in California and learn how to identify and ethically harvest herbs in the field.

Do you want to be able to confidently identify herbs & plants and turn them into herbal medicine? If you are ready to take the guesswork out of plant identification, then join Certified Clinical Herbalist Emily Sanders to learn how to key out plants in the field.

In this class we will survey common herbal plant families in California and learn how to identify and ethically harvest herbs in the field. Tour the ecosystems of southern California in the Santa Barbara area, learn how to key out plants step-by-step using the Jepson Manual or other dichotomous keys.

Have fun in the field with your new community of aspiring herbalists and holistic healers and connect to other like-minded people just like you.

What you will learn:

  • Learn the wonderful world of botanical terms and how to identify plants.
  • Survey over 40 plant families and common herbs and plants within them.
  • Understand how to use the Jepson Manual and successful practice and key out plants.
  • Survey common ecosystems of Southern California, and learn what each unique habitat provides.
  • Learn why certain plant species have become endangered, and how to protect them.
  • Learn how to identify herbal stands to safely and ethically wild harvest your own medicine.
  • Get live support & coaching from a Certified Clinical Herbalist and Nutritionist & founder of the Artemisia Academy, Emily Sanders.
  • Connect with a new community of like-minded people.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for intermediate aspiring herbalists and holistic practitioners that have already had a fundamental overview herbal training. Basic understanding plant identification, and a working knowledge of herbs in the Santa Barbara area are required before taking this course. If you have already taken a beginner herbalist program, and are ready to move beyond the basics, then this class is just for you.

What do I need?

Students will need basic hiking equipment and clothes, a pocket microscope, and a copy of Botany in A day and the Jepson Manual (hard copy or digital, but hard copy is usually preferred). Expect supplies to cost about $160-200 unless you already have the books on your shelf. You will get a book & supply list before starts class so that you will be prepared.

What if I miss the live class?

Anyone who registers for the class will be given access to the online class portal. All class lectures will have the audio recorded and posted online so that you can listen to it anytime. Class notes and hand outs will also be posted online, so no matter what, you won’t miss anything!

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Community Herbalist, this course is part of the Community Herbalist Program. If you want to go beyond this class and learn not only how to identify and harvest your own medicine, but how to formulate herbal remedies and turn them into sellable products for retail, you can join us for more hands-on classes in the rest of the program.
