Description

Intro to Aquaponics will cover:

  • Definition, applications and benefits of small-scale aquaponics
  • Fish, plants and bacteria in the aquaponic system
  • The nitrogen cycle and bacterial biofilter
  • Overview of the parts of an aquaponic system
  • Basic water quality parameters and testing
  • System cycling / startup
  • Environmental considerations
  • HANDS ON! Reconstruction and walk-through of a 30-gallon fish-tank system

Participants will receive a fact sheet with all relevant information.

Mon & Weds classes run from 6pm to 7pm, Q&A to follow. Doors open at 5:30 for settling in. Sat & Sun classes run from 1pm to 2pm, Q&A to follow. Doors open at 12:30. Snacks and beverages are welcome.

The Course is led by Brian Filipowich, Director of Anacostia Aquaponics and Chair of the national Aquaponics Association. Class takes place on Cultivate the City's rooftop farm, above W.S. Jenk's & Sons' Hardware Store.

This class is part of the Small-Scale Aquaponics Training Course, geared towards aquaponic systems of 30 to 500 gallons.
