ABOUT THIS CLASS

Lighting controls not only what we see, but how we see. Lighting has a unique ability to communicate nonverbally, allowing artists, musicians, and performers to expand their vocabulary.

In this course, we introduce students to lighting technology associated with a variety of live events and performance work. Students are taught underlying principles including DMX communication protocol, lighting previsualization software, controllable qualities of light, and lighting programming utilizing the Hog4 platform. Team projects throughout the quarter are designed to prepare students for a live event or installation environment. Upon completion, students will be able to set up and program unique lighting environments. The class will culminate in students creating a collaborative, real-world lighting design system for the Fall Student Showcase.
