Event description

Description

**This class has 2 consecutive Wednesday sessions**
NOTE: By the end of this workshop all students will be certified to use our in-house laser cutter.

Learn the basics of 2D computer aided design (CAD) while crafting a set of beautiful wooden earrings with our laser cutter! This 2 session class teaches the steps needed to transform a digital design into a finished physical object.

Class one will include an overview and demonstration of the process before we learn how to navigate and create a laser cuttable design using free Inkscape software. We’ll discuss the difference between raster and vector images, and how the laser cuts with both types, and learn about the importance of knowing your material as a crucial part of the design process. In class 2 each student will receive hands-on time with the laser as we learn how to operate the machine, and how to produce precision cuts using our earring designs. After everyone has cut their wooden pieces, we’ll end by walking through the wood finishing and earring assembly process.

Things that we provide:

  • Hardwood strips of Sapele and Red Birch, ready for the laser

  • Earring Hardware - fishhooks, lever backs, jump rings, double rings

  • Wood finishing oil - tung oil, butcher block oil

  • Painters tape (to reduce laser ‘underburn’)

  • iMac computers for design use

Things you can bring (optional):

  • Hardwood strips - approx. 1/16” thick

  • Earring hardware - fishhook, kidney wire, or lever back and jump rings preferred

  • Your own laptop computer with Inkscape pre-installed

About the Instructor

Adam Zelny is a multimedia designer and educator in the fields of 2D and 3D CAD, digital fabrication, audio and video production, music, and design oriented art. As a part of Technocopia's administration team, he has helped build the education platform for tool training and workshop programs, and actively teaches classes for laser cutter and 3D printer workflows. His role as an educator involves incorporating art into STEM oriented classes, crafting professional development workshops for fellow teachers, and using digital fab tools to learn and make useful things that look good. As a former board member, Adam played a role in relocating and expanding Technocopia's facility and programs, and continues to volunteer his time to growing the makerspace. Adam thinks that sci-fi is a great genre, and enjoys the occasionally good video game.
