Intro to Interactive Light-Based Art

January 12 - February 23, 2019
Saturdays, 10am - 1 pm
7 class sessions + open house exhibit March 2, 2019

$300 class fee + $50 material fee


ABOUT THIS CLASS

In this 7-session course, you will learn how to control LEDs with a microcontroller based on sensory inputs. For your project, you can choose a sensor to make your art react changes in sound, light, color, proximity, motion, body gestures, temperature, humidity, or touch. You can even include buttons and knobs as additional input devices. This is a beginner level course. You will learn just enough programming and electronics to bring your artistic vision to light.

This course is great for beginners and is geared toward sculptors, installation artists, public artists, designers, live performers, lighting techs, landscape architects, DIYers—anyone interested in creating dynamic light-based work.This course is carefully designed to start at zero and only spend time on the technical details you need to create your project. We keep technical terms to a minimum and carefully explain them. We also give you the resources to continue learning on your own after the course. If you already know some programming or electronics, then you may be able to leverage that knowledge to make your project more complex.

At the end of the class, you will have created your own interactive light-based art object, and you will have gained the knowledge and experience necessary to go on to create bigger and more complex light installations.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Setup and usage of the Arduino microcontroller programming environment
  • Basic programming and debugging skills
  • How to control LEDs (brightness, color, patterns, etc)
  • How to read buttons and knobs
  • How to read data from various sensors

CLASS MATERIALS

Students must have:

  • Laptop (Mac or PC)
  • Micro USB Cable

dadageek provides:

  • Arduino-compatible microcontroller
  • Breadboard, wires, resistors, button, potentiometer
  • One strip of RGB LEDs
  • One sensor of your choice
  • All materials are included and yours to keep!
  • For your class project, you may wish to purchase additional materials


REQUIREMENTS
  • No prior electronics experience
  • No prior programming experience

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Mickey Delp is an electrical and computer engineer with expertise in analog and digital circuit design and embedded systems programming. He is the founder and Chief Inventor of Delptronics, a maker of unique electronic musical instruments. Mickey has been teaching electronics workshops—in person and virtually—for eight years.

He exhibits his work every year at Maker Faire and SXSW Create and is a frequent contributor to Fantastic Arcade as well as presenter at Dorkbot, and Boss and presenter at Nerd Nite. Mickey is also an electronic musician who performs regularly around Austin.

If the class minimum has not been met, the class will be canceled or rescheduled. Those who have pre-paid will be notified in advance and will have an option to receive a class credit or a full refund.
