About this Event

Clinic Description

If you are looking to try ice or mixed climbing for the first time, then this clinic is for you! Ice conditions will determine the exact nature of the climbing, but you will likely get to try your hand at both swinging into ice and hooking rock with your tools and crampons. By the end, you will have gained the confidence and fundamental skills you need to continue developing as a mixed climber.

Some basic previous climbing experience and a familiarity with climbing equipment will be helpful, but is not mandatory.

Arrive 15 minutes early if you need to be fit for crampons.

Equipment

A helmet, harness, ice tools (axes), and crampons will be provided for you, although you may certainly bring your own.

You must provide for yourself crampon-compatible mountaineering boots.

In Duluth, boots can be rented at Vertical Endeavors (which has weekend hours), or at UMD or St. Scholastica (neither open on weekends), or at Hard Water Sports in Sandstone, MN, if you are coming up from the south.

Dress for conditions. Depending upon the weather, you could get cold, or wet—or both!

Cost

You may notice that this is a screaming deal for a clinic. This is made possible by generous donations from Duluth Cider and a new company called Crag Dog. So be sure to swing by Duluth Cider and grab a drink or a growler and then check out Crag Dog’s upcycled dog leashes.
