Learn how to make a beautiful field journal to record your nature observations. Practice mindfulness and mark-making alongside the San Lorenzo river. Deepen your observation skills and relationship to the river we call home.

In this workshop, we will:
- bind a personal field journal using the pamphlet stitch
- take a walk to the San Lorenzo River that runs just behind the All Hands studio
- have a guided introduction to field journaling as we make observations of local river ecology
- write and draw in your handmade field journal
- practice mindfulness in community
- learn more about the local river body that connects us to the sea and provides habitat for numerous beings, seen and unseen including birds, plants, and animals

The following supplies are included:
- journal paper
- card stock cover paper
- waxed linen thread and needles
- an awl
- bone folders
- self-healing mat
- punch guide
- x-acto knives
- rulers
- scissors
- graphite drawing pencils
- charcoal

You can bring:
- comfortable walking shoes
- layers for changing weather
- a refillable water bottle
- any writing or drawing tools that you desire to work with

You will go home with:
- a hand-bound field journal and the knowledge of how to reproduce this process on your own
- a deeper appreciation for the local river
- strategies to deepen nature observation

About the instructor:
Melody Overstreet is an artist and educator that is interested in the ten thousand things that compose and sustain us. She is a Printer and Book Artist that works with local Little Giant Collective studio, and is a certified California Naturalist through UCSC's Arboretum. She has a passion for teaching courses at the intersection of Ecology, Wellness and Art. Her work has been featured in publications inclusive of Seed Broadcast, Inverness Almanac, and Chinquapin Quarterly. She offers occasional workshops through Cabrillo College Extension, the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, and The UCSC Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Her educational approach emphasizes the importance of connection to our origins through plants, community and place.
