Intro to Arduino

Saturdays 2pm - 5pm
September 30 - November 11
7 class sessions + Student Showcase

$250 per student + $65 materials

ABOUT THIS CLASS

Learning the basics of microcontrollers is vital for anyone looking to create interactive or new media work. This class is perfect for those new to coding, those who need a little help getting into the Arduino world, or experienced coders who would like to take their first steps into hardware.

We’ll start at the absolute beginning of learning to code. After a few baby steps, you’ll be writing your own code to blink lights and beep sounds.

ABOUT ARDUINO

Arduino is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use, inexpensive hardware and free software. Arduino is the "brain" of tens of thousands of DIY projects, from light-based installations, kinetic sculptures to scientific instruments. A worldwide community of makers—students, hobbyists, artists, programmers, and professionals—uses this open-source platform.

In this class, we’ll be using the Teensy 3.2 Arduino compatible board as it’s much more powerful than the standard Arduino UNO while being about the same price and is able to produce hi-fi audio and control lots of LEDs simply.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
  • What Arduino is and how can it be used
  • Fundamentals of coding
  • Basic digital and analog electronics

PROJECTS

This course will focus on three projects.

1 First, we’ll learn the basics of code by controlling blinking LEDs with knobs and buttons.

2. Next, comes controlling a whole 8x8 matrix of full-color lights. You’ll learn how to display graphics and even make little games and generative art pieces on it.

3. Finally, we will put it all together by adding a sound component using a powerful but easy to use Teesny audio library. Here you’ll be able to add your own touches to the piece and use all the skills you’ve learned in class to make it your own piece of digital art!

Once the class is finished you can show off your creations at the student showcase.

COURSE MATERIALS

All you will need is a laptop. Either Mac or Windows is fine and it doesn't have to be top of the line at all.

Thee the necessary materials will be provided and are yours to keep:

  • The Arduino compatible microcontroller board (Teensy 3.2)

  • 2 breadboards for prototyping circuits

  • Speaker, amplifier, and headphone connector.

  • 8x8 addressable RGB LED grid with diffuser and mounting stand

  • Controls and sensors - Potentiometers, light sensors and buttons

  • Various components - Wires, simple LEDs, resistors, capacitors and everything else you’ll need to make your first circuits.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

I kind of shied away from coding as a kid, thinking it was too tedious to make interesting things with, but about 10 years ago when I saw what you could accomplish with simple code and hardware combined with traditional artistic techniques I was hooked.

Arduino isn't about spending more time at a computer making art. It’s about taking the best, most powerful aspects of digital devices and liberating them from the confines of our boring laptops.

Since then I’ve used it to make numerous installations, fun gizmos, and even commercial products.
