Event description

Description

September 25 - December 4th, 2017
10 Mondays (no class on October 9th)

Have you ever had a great new app idea, but didn’t know how to build it? No problem. In Intro to App Design, students with little or no computer programming experience will learn the fundamentals of programming and its role in creating apps. Each week students will learn a different programming skill and then build a mobile Android app which applies that skill. This will culminate in a final project which will span the last few weeks of the course. In this project, students will have an opportunity to brainstorm, design, and then develop an app of their choosing.

This course uses the MIT App Inventor platform. This is a block-based programming language used to simplify the process of creating mobile apps for Android phones and tablets. It is similar to the Scratch programming language. It is perfect for people who are new to programming. The skills learned in this class will transfer well to learning traditional programming languages such as Java, Python, and C.

By the end of the course, students will have learned the fundamentals of logical programming. In addition, students will have gained skills in the app design process. They will learn about what makes a good user interface and how to connect the front-end (visual component of the app) to the back-end (functional component of the app).

This course is taught by MIT class of 2017 graduate Keith Galli, an instructor affiliated with Tinker and Create.
