This is Not a Small Voice: Unlocking your Inner Poet

A Workshop with Paul Mabon of Get Lit – Words Ignite! (ages 5-16)

In the worlds of MLK, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” In this workshop, Paul Mabon, of Get Lit-Words Ignite, will take you on an inspiring journey where you read, write and speak up about what affects you and the world around you. Examine the power of your voice, using classic poems and spoken word responses, to inspire change and let in the light. This family-friendly workshop is a chance to get loud and proud about ending our silence and taking back our voices.

Paul Mabon is Manager of Arts Education for Get Lit. He operates the Saturday workshop classes open to all high school age students and coaches his own team, “Literate.” He also assists with school visits and event coordination. Paul is a committed scholar of classical Shakespearean sonnets and ballads. As a college student, he won numerous national poetry competitions that allowed him to present his work before poetry legends. After winning individual poetry slam competitions, in 2008 he was selected to travel with Da Poetry Lounge to compete in the (NPS) National Poetry Slam. Since the early 90′s Paul has been working professionally with high-school students in classrooms and auditoriums lecturing, mentoring, and coaching. He has the unique ability connect with kids through their poetry in a way that develops their poetic voice and also truly builds their confidence. Paul’s work has been seen on NBC’s ‘It’s Showtime at the Apollo,’ HBO’s ‘Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry’ Season V, and TV-one’s ‘Verses and Flow’ Season III.
