International Film Festival Manhattan Co-Programming with Underground FilmFest

German Filmmaker Showcase (with Programmer James Kellogg Founder of Underground FilmFest)

Underground FilmFest is a global pop-up festival showcasing over 24 countriesworldwide films by professional, first time and student filmmakers in events in Saigon, villages in Cameroon, Reyjavik, Brimingham, Munich and other cities. We bring to you tonight some of our audience and jury favorites from our last 3 seasons.

Shorts Program:

1) "The Way You Die" (Schnee in Rio) 26 Mins Dir: Manuel Vogel (Germany)

Jury favorite of the 2015 Underground FilmFest. 1960. Night. A train on the way through the Iron Curtain. In it, Sebastian (Andreas Thiele) - a man like you and me. Actually, he was to accompany a painting on his way to Prague. But when he finds one of the guards (Norman B. Gray) dead in the toilet, Sebastian is already in the midst of the whimsical agent world of the 60s. Who is the Scotsman in a perfectly-fitting suit (Erol Sander), who is looking for life with a sound-dampened weapon? Is the pretty train attendant (Jil Funke) really what she appears to be? In order to save his life and the painting, Sebastian has to jump over his own shadow and free himself from the catches of his frenzied fiance (Finja Martens).

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Manuel Vogel was born in 1991 and grew up in Munich, Germany. Since he was young he was impressed by thrilling and entertaining movies that make you leave the cinema with a good feeling.
Besides his directing studies at Macromedia University of Applied Science in Munich he worked for the german TV network ProSiebenSat1.
At this time he was in charge of programs like „Broken Comedy“ or „MyVideo Rushhour“.
In 2012, parallel to his studies, he shot the action-short „Uberstein“. In 2014 he achieved his Bachelor of Arts with „The Way You Die“ as his Bachelor thesis.

2) "Twefth Night (Rauhnacht) 13 Mins Dir: Kathrin Anna Stahl (Germany)

Winner of the 2016-2017 Underground FilmFest - Global Audience Award for Best Directing and Best Sound/Music.

A poor day laborer, having worked his whole life trying to raise the social status of his family almost succeeds only to be thwarted at the last minute by the innocent but devastating playfulness of his child.

About the Director

Kathrin Anna Stahl has been trained in opera singing but quickly turned towards theatre and film. Since then she has served as assistant director on over a dozen short and feature films and currently works as an actress in Munich, Germany. In her own work, she pays tribute to the rural area of her homeland and also shot TWELFTH NIGHT, her second short film, in Northern Bavaria close to Czech Republic. Both her short films have been funded by the Film and Television Fund of the Bavarian State (FFF Bayern) and her first feature film screenplay just went into production.


3) "Bahar in Wonderland" 17 Mins Dir: Behrooz Karamizade (Germany)

Jury favorite of the 2015 Underground FilmFest. Where do you hide from danger, when you can´t hide anywhere? The kurdish girl Bahar believes she has found a way.

„Bahar in Wonderland“ is the story of Bahar, a little girl, who given the circumstances she is in, is not able to be a child. She is escaping with her father from Syria to Germany. In order to fight her fears and defend herself from danger she believes in being able to get invisible by closing her eyes.
