"The Timelife of B's Life" LGBT Drama 81 mins Dir: Crisaldo Pablo Philippines

This movie, aside from the noble and heartwarming story is inspiring in the way it has been produced. Out of school youth and adolescents from high school as well as college students helped in the creation of the story, in the production and in bringing the movie to communities. This noble campaign for HIV prevention and stigma reduction for young key population is worth your time and deserves world attention.

An adolescent male, Benjie, joins his much older Senior High School classmates and pretends to be of legal age, in order to be allowed to take the free testing for HIV to receive some gift tokens. He then finds out that he is infected with HIV and rushes home, scared of what to do and who to turn to. The next day, his classmates have spread the news about his status and he gets mocked and slapped. From then on, he leaves the house in the morning but instead of going to school, goes to the park to pass the time. But he later contracts urinary tract infection and eventually, due to so much stress in his abusive home, collapses. When his father finds out his HIV status, he violently threatens his mother to make a choice between keeping Benjie and losing her three other younger children. Benjie’s mother sends him away with only a few coins. We then follow Benjie in his attempt to have a life and find meaning in his new journey, to trust in strangers, fall in love again, and be broken.

In the Philippines at the time of the making of the movie, anyone who is below 18 or below legal age must be accompanied by a guardian or parent, to be allowed to take the HIV test. This caused several adolescents to avoid taking the test causing them to find out their status when they already have opportunistic infections. Based on the personal testimonies of interviewees (persons living with HIV who found out their status when they were adolescents), there were cases of adolescents who needed to avail the government provided services and medication but due to the law about the guardian requirement, did not pursue, and later became patients at the public hospital for patients with full-blown AIDS and opportunistic infections.
