~ The Professor, The Swamp Yankee and American Soul Legend:
Grayson Hugh ~

A unique, private evening with acclaimed piano-soul singer-songwriter Grayson Hugh and singer Polly Messer on Saturday June 2nd, 2018 7PM - 10PM, hosted at The Village Studios, 1616 Butler Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90025.

This red-carpet event will be a rare West Coast opportunity to hear Grayson on the instrument he shines on - a concert grand piano – and to be invited into The Village Studios, legendary recording home to artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Stone Temple Pilots, Lady Gaga, and the list goes on.

Discovered in an elevator on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Grayson signed with RCA Records and his 1988 debut album, “Blind To Reason,” received rave reviews and went Gold in the U.S. and overseas.

Grayson’s second album “Road to Freedom” (MCA 1992) was called one of 1992’s Top Ten Albums by Billboard Magazine and contained songs that were featured in the Oscar-winning films “Thelma and Louise” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.”

In 2010, Grayson recorded his successful comeback album “An American Record” and then “Back To The Soul” in 2015, which made it onto the Ballot for a 2015 Grammy in the Best Americana Album category.

Grayson will be honored with a career achievement award at the event.

$40, includes admission, light snacks, alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, and cocktails), non-alcoholic drinks, and a few small surprises!

Limited tickets available.

~ More about Grayson Hugh and Polly Messer ~

Singer-songwriter Grayson Hugh’s life and career has been one of struggles and victories, contradictions and serendipity, curses and blessings, incredible highs and frightening lows. He grew up on classical music but chose rock ’n roll. He was a high school dropout who became a Professor of Songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston. From the suburbs of Connecticut, he learned piano as a teen playing in a gospel choir at an inner city church.

After studying at Hartford Conservatory of Music, he studied piano with jazz legends Jaki Byard and Ran Blake. Grayson is a songwriter of many styles and was commissioned to compose scores for modern dance choreographers, such as the late Viola Farber and Prometheus Dance in Cambridge.

He dresses like a Southern rocker biker but his voice has been compared to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. His passion for his art has taken him to the top of the music world and to the very bottom. He truly is an American artist who has come back to his soul.

Polly Messer sang with the popular swing band Eight To The Bar. In 1982 Grayson invited her to sing with Grayson Hugh & the Wild Tones on the NPR “In Performance” TV series. They also sang together in New York clubs, including the legendary Gerde’s Folk City.

Not seeing each other since 1994, Polly and Grayson reconnected in 2006 and started working together again. One harmony led to another and the two were married in 2008. Grayson and Polly have collaborated on his albums and performed his music in concert halls from St. Louis to West Palm Beach and from New York City to Vancouver Island. Notably, Grayson completed a two-week Acoustic Tour of Poland and his music is particularly popular with Native American and First Nations audiences and with the Maori people of New Zealand.

Hailing from New England, Grayson refers to himself as a Swamp Yankee but has built worldwide following. He has lived in Connecticut, Manhattan, The Hamptons, Los Angeles, coastal North Carolina, Boston and Cape Cod. His June 2nd performance at The Village Studios will be a long-overdue chance to see and meet him back on the West Coast again.
