Event description

Description

Join the Junior League of Edmonton (JLE) for an empowering evening in support and celebration of International Women’s Day. This year, we are proud to present a screening and panel discussion of HERoic, a documentary funded by Telus’ StoryHive and directed by Edmonton’s own Nicole Murphy.

HERoic chronicles four diverse female athletes on incredible journeys as they overcome the odds and expectations to pursue their dreams:

  • Shruti Kowtwal, India’s first female long-track speed skater, who trained at the University of Calgary’s Olympic Oval;

  • Sarah Mickey, a former competitive figure skater that lost mobility in her legs and overcame depression by focusing on Paralympic sports;

  • Kalie Humphries, Olympic gold medalist, who was bullied relentlessly growing up but never gave up on her dreams; and

  • Sheena T. Kaine, a young Métis mother of two who is making her mark in the Canadian professional boxing community.

Meet and interact with the women of the film! Our panel discussion will feature Nicole Murphy and Sheena T. Kaine, and moderated by our MC for the evening, Alex Sirovyak.
