About our guest speakers:
Flavio Menezes is a Professor of Economics at The University of Queensland. He was Head of the School of Economics from 2009 to 2015. He joined The University of Queensland in 2006 after more than a decade at the Australian National University, where amongst other responsibilities he was the Foundation Director of the Australian Centre of Regulatory Economics. Flavio was also a part-time Vice President with the Regulatory Economics and Public Policy Practice at CRA International in Canberra in 2005-2006 and a Senior Consultant until 2007.
He is the immediate past President of the Economic Society of Australia (QLD), the Chair of the Queensland Competition Authority, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Government's Deregulation Taskforce. He is a fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and was the Chair of the Economics and Commerce Research Evaluation Committee for ERA 2018. He is a member of editorial boards and associate editor of a number of international journals, and the current co-editor of the Economic Record.
Flavio Menezes is regarded as one of Australia’s leading auction experts. He has published over 75 journal articles on the economics of auctions, competition and regulatory economics, industrial organization, and market design.
Professor Menezes has a rich consulting experience both in Australia and abroad. His experience in Australia includes advising the Federal government, AEMC, ACCC, IPART, QCA, the ACT and Victorian Governments on market design issues in regulatory environments. It also includes providing economic advice to various private and public organisations on mergers, competition, auction design and regulatory issues in defence, fisheries, gambling, energy, banking, health, transport, water and telecommunications.
Gabriel Fiuza de Bragança currently holds an influential role at the Department of Development and Infrastructure, part of the Brazilian Federal Treasury. Gabriel is a researcher in competition, regulation and infrastructure economics for the Brazilian Institute of Applied Research in Economics (IPEA) with almost a decade of experience in the field. He has produced several papers and book chapters about investment and regulatory matters in the Brazilian industries of energy and telecommunications. Internationally, he published in the Energy Policy journal and co-authored the book: ‘Forest Valuation under Carbon Pricing’. Gabriel’s research has been awarded with important prizes both in Brazil and Australia.
He has recently finished a PhD program in economics at the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) - New Zealand. Gabriel´s doctoral studies were undertaken within the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation (ISCR). He also holds a master’s degree in economics by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and a master’s degree in Finance by Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA).
