Event description

Description

This symposium will explore what we know about the historic relationship between the fishers from Makassar and the Yolngu groups of northern Australia and how this relationship has been explored in artistic partnerships in the past. We then want to build on the connections, learnings, and partnerships and take them in new directions through the medium and language of contemporary art.

During the symposium the Victorian College of Arts at the University of Melbourne and Rumata' Artspace in Makassar will introduce their ambitious artist exchange program that brings six artists together - three artists from Makassar and three Yolngu artists from Yirrkala, East Arnhem Land. The artists will meet and explore local cultures and identities of the people of Makassar and then Yolngu perspectives on their relationship to the fishers of Makassar. This will be done through a range of cultural activities in Makassar, Darwin and finally East Arnhem Land. It is anticipated that this exchange will lead to further future collaborations, including student exchange programs.
