Event description

Family Night at the Framingham State University Planetarium presents:

International Observe the Moon Night

The Moon has been a source of wonder and inspiration throughout human history. Over 400 years ago, Galileo pointed his telescope at the Moon, and discovered it to be a harsh world covered in mountains and craters. 50 years ago, humanity took its first steps on that world. October 20th is International Observe the Moon Night, and we are please to present a program (on October 19) designed to get you and your family looking up and exploring. In the planetarium, we will present the fulldome film Two Small Pieces of Glass: The Amazing Telescope, which tells the story of the telescope’s role in scientific discovery, beginning with Galileo. We’ll also give you a quick tour of your night sky, including our beautiful Moon, to set you up for a night (and a lifetime) of exploring the sky.

After the show, if weather permits, we will lead some simple moon observations outside. We’ll have a few small telescopes, but feel free to bring your own – including binoculars (the best tool for observing the Moon)!

Fulldome Film: yes • Live Planetarium Content: yes • Guest Speaker: no

Monthly public programs at FSU’s digital planetarium are about one hour in length and may include some combination of: a fulldome feature film, a short talk presented by a guest speaker, and/or a live planetarium segment. A live planetarium segment may include a tour of the seasonal night sky and/or other multimedia elements presented with live narration.

Family Night at the FSU Planetarium is a series of events designed to give families with children ages 6 and up an opportunity to discover the marvelous diversity of our universe, together.

To ensure visitor safety and quality of presentation, planetarium doors will remain closed once the show has begun. Late arrivals will not be admitted.

Pre-registered guests will be given priority admission, but pre-registration does not guarantee admission. If pre-registered guests have not checked within 5 minutes of start time, seats will be made available to anyone, first come-first-served. Seating of guests, pre-registered or not, will cease when capacity has been reached.

Suggested Donation: $5 per guest
